So yeah,

The stupid a-hole soon-to-be-ex screwed me when he left this pretty decent gaming computer that I have no admninistrative rights on. I cannot create a new file under c:\programs\wow\etc. beacause I don't have rights to make new folders, so the patch tries to make this folder, it can't, patch never installs, and I can't play WoW.

So, I need to reset the admin password. Yeah, I spent over an hour and figured out where in the the BIOS I can change the boot order so that I can boot from the CD-ROM drive. I got a Win XP Professional disk from my dad sine the soon-to-be-ex took the installation disks (for WoW too). I don't have the product key but I'm sure i can get one (more hoops to jump through).

So I went to do a repair by booting from the CD and got the point where you hit R for repair...no hard disk detected. I read some more white papers and found this can happen if your hard drive is pretty big (mine is) and you don't have SP2 installed (I don't).

So I go download SP2 and of course I CAN'T INSTALL IT because guess what...no admin rights!

So I think I have to reinstall the whole OS which I have never done before since I'm only a user and not a computer person. Of course I'll need the product key for that so hopefully I don't need to buy Windows. Then to figure out how to reinstall WoW wihtout the disks (I think I was told I can but the trial version for like 2 bucks and install that since I already have an active user account).

So yeah, it's gonna be a while and will probably take some money too. Any suggestions or sympathy is much appreciated.

Peace,
Roby

Ok, Roby

go to http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

download cd070923.zip

unzip it, burn it to cd, boot from it, follow its prompts, reset the admin password.

remove the cd from the drive

reboot

login as admin.

Okay but the reset admin password thing won't tell me there is no hard drive detected will it? I will try this tonight, thanks million. Not like I'm addicted to WoW or anything.

Okay, trying this now. Question, I used the key finder but the key on this machine is not going to match the disk I'm gonna use. I hope this won't be a problem. I'll find out soon...

He took all the CDs so I had to go buy media. Then, the only CD writing software on this machine is Nero. Nero tells me I do not have CD burning rights and to get my admin to give me rights. I'm seriously gonna kill someone.

I noticed I CAN make new folders elsewhere on this machine. Maybe it's possible to move the entire WoW folder somewhere else and try ti install the patch there?

Your soon to be ex must really not like you.

As for the key matching the cd, it depends, if you have an oem install, that is one key, corp has another, retail still has a third.

ouch, I was hoping that you could get a cd burned as the reset disk has drivers for almost all hard drive types/controllers.

Okay, well I don't think I need that now, because I can do the thing with the XP disk I borrowed (if the product key works if I ever get that far).

SYMPTOMS
During the text-mode portion of Windows NT Setup, you may receive the following error message after Setup detects all SCSI adapters and then proceeds to copy files for installation:
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your system.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs because any SCSI adapter that requires updated original equipment manufacturer (OEM) drivers must be detected last if that SCSI adapter is the controller for the disk drive that will contain the system partition. If you are installing to a drive that is connected to an unsupported SCSI adapter that requires updated OEM drivers, that unsupported SCSI adapter is the first adapter to be detected, and without the correct SCSI driver, Setup returns the error message that the drive can not be found.

RESOLUTION
The SCSI adapter requires that Setup detect updated OEM drivers correctly. To resolve this behavior, add that driver after Setup detects all other SCSI adapters in the computer. If you are adding more than one SCSI driver during Setup, you must add the driver for the adapter that is associated with the drive that the system partition will be located on last.

So I have to add that driver using a floppy disk (yay I have a floppy drive on this machine and actual floppy disks in the house). Now, how do I know what driver to go get?? As you probably guessed this is custom built by ass-hat-ex-guy and not some Dell or HP system off the shelf. I have no clue what hard drive is in there. If I have to open the case I think I might just pour some gasoline in and light a match.

If you find you need to reinstall from scratch, consider finding a computer-clued college student and give them $50 and a pizza to do the work for you. No good if you're broke, but if not it could save you untold time and aggravation.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Always remember too, CLEAVAGE will get most guys to do almost anything for free. No need to use the computer as a anchor . Just use your womanly charm. Worse case scenario is call Circuit City and there techs can break the admin code for you. Not free but worth the money.

Roby an "artistic" pic is payment enough for me lol j/k a couple quick questions, & hopefully this will save you from dropping a mint on Geeksquad.

Windows XP? if ya home/pro/media center edition
If it's home edition try this.

Reboot the computer & start tapping F8 when it gets to the windows bar asking if you want additional boot options, should be right after the computer beeps at you the first time. Boot to safe mode then try logging in as administrator you don't know how many times I've come across people who forget to put admin passwords on.

For Windows XP Pro/Media Center edition

Log out then hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice to bring up a login prompt where you can type in the username and type administrator in there to try logging in without a password.

Now here's the fun parts.
If your computer is a newer HP/Compaq reboot & start tapping F10, this will bring you up to a recovery option that will allow you to re-install windows without a disk & will come in as it's defaults

if it's a dell, gateway, emachine, or the recovery partition on your hp is corrupted and the machine came with XP on it, you may be able to obtain an OEM CD from a friend or *cough* torrent *cough* Usually your 25 digit product key will be found on the back of your PC or upper side of the PC on a certificate of authenticity.

If you need to go the OEM CD route you may need to look up your PC on the manufacturers site or if it's a DIY PC where someone built it for you, you'll have to go to the motherboard manufacturer's website to download the proper SATA/Raid drivers to make the proper driver diskette so windows will detect your HD. if you need anymore info in this route, pvt me & I'll help the best I can.

My machine is custom built. It's Win XP Professional (most likely an "educational" version if you know what I mean). There is no way to look up what is inside since it was all purchased at computer shows and assembled at home. There is no way in hell he forgot to put a password. I don't know the motherboard manufacturer so I can't go to the correct website. I need to discover what HD is in here so I can get the right drivers onto the diskette. Thanks for any help you can give. I might open the case and peek in to see if I can guess the type of HD.

Okay, I have a Maxtor 6y080m0 80G drive. I was able to burn the CD-ROM and run it. It gets to the same point where I need a floppy with the driver on it. I can't find this driver anywhere. Then I find out that I really have 2 of those drives configured in a RAID. Supposedly you cannot install XP with this configuration which is silly since that's what I'm running currently. If there is any way to get this driver onto a floppy I can try the process again. These drives are old (made in 2003). Seagate bought Maxtor at some point and I'm just not finding the right drivers out there.

Still pulling my hair out and waiting on help. Thanks Trivs

What you need is the driver for the raid controller, which is going to be much harder to identify than the drive manufacturer.

Do these drives connect directly to the motherboard, or do they connect to a card that slots into the motherboard?

Nothing to see here. Move along.

So I am trying to get the raid driver for my hard drive which I have identified as Asus P4C800 E Deluxe. I found the raid driver on the Asus website. I am still having trouble getting it onto the floppy in the right way so that I can run through this process but I will be back as soon as possible and flying my damn epic! I am so frustrated but eventually I will get this worked out.

Peace,
Roby
